Featured Modeller - Steve Crump

‘The South African military has always interested me. It’s that fusion of top class military kit combined with excellence in the field. The Casspir, Ratel and Buffel are just amazing vehicles; superb feats of military engineering.  The South African armed forces in action were – and still are - second to none. The Cassinga assault was the largest airborne assault since the Second World War, an amazing feat of arms that has hardly been recognised.  I’m not the best modeller, but I try! My next SADF project is Tamiya’s 1/25th Chieftain. It’s just crying out to be an Olifant!’

1/35 Scale SADF Puma

I built this model in 1994 in Bosnia when I was working with the International Red Cross. This model is now a virtual antique and was built before the days of Photo-Etch, chipping, shading etc! Nevertheless I’m very proud of this model as I built it in such difficult circumstances and got it, gingerly, back to the UK in one piece. It is the Matchbox Puma with a mixture of Tamiya and Verlinden figures. There’s a full casevac going on in the cabin. One of my Red Cross colleagues was a Russian guy on secondment from the Russian Red Cross. Once he got over the shock of someone gluing plastic together he used to avail of his time as a Soviet adviser in Angola during the Border War.  Where are you now Sergei Abdourakmanov?!

1/48th Scale SAN StrikeCraft

This is my version of the SAN StrikeCraft.......  I fell in love with this vessel when I saw Chris Baxter’s amazing model built for the SAN. I decided I must have one.  Several years passed and I couldn’t find the right hull. Then when working in Paris I saw a Patrol Craft hull built by Model Maquettes of France. I quickly acquired the hull and built the craft as you see, with a set of guns from Sirmar. This craft is fully radio controlled; it always turns heads on the water!

1/72nd Scale Puma

I love the Puma. I was always jumping on the French UNPROFOR Puma’s in Bosnia! This Airfix Puma was built for wargaming; I have a flight of three. Here it is landing a fireteam whilst a Chinook thunders in to effect a Casevac.  What do you mean you didn’t know about the secret lend-lease Chinooks................
