'I prefer to build modern subjects and I have always been interested in something 'a bit different'. I remember as a child the news reports from Angola and sometimes there would be film of these odd looking South African vehicles (at least to the eyes of a young British lad). Later I would see film of the blue and yellow Police Casspirs, they also stuck in the mind. Over the years I developed an interest in the SA Military, so it was great to finally see the kits begin to appear.' David Rowe

1/35th Scale Ratel

This Ratel is an FCM model, built mainly out of the box. I have added a set of Baxmod wheels, Acurate Armour's p.e. tie downs and a converted driver figure from the spares box. This will be a vehicle from the Bush War era.

1/35th Scale Olifant

This Olifant is quite an involved buil, but basically it's Modelcraft's Centurion Mk. III kit with Legend Model's IDF 1973 Centurion conversion. Baxmod's own conversion supplied the SA specific turret bin, hull bins and some of the smaller turret parts. I adapted AFV Club's wheels and suspension set to fit the Modelcraft lower hull, I then had to add Firestorm's resin tires because AFV Club's vinyl versions are notorious for resisting most known glues!

If I was to go back and start again, I wouldn't bother replacing the wheels and suspension. The commander's hatch is also a Legend's product. I have also scratch-built some of the parts myself, headlights and guards, turret basket and some of the details on the rear of the hull. The tracks will be WWII Productions resin replacements, they are very nice!

After starting my Olifant Baxmod released their own conversion and Cromwell Models also released a conversion for the AFV Club Centurion. This one will let you build a later version of the Olifant Mk. 1A and it is excellent.
