From Wings to Jackboots is based on the diaries kept by the author while serving as a pilot with the South African Air Force during the Second World War. He saw action in the campaigns of North Africa, Sicily and Italy until he was shot down over Italy in January 1944. He then spent three months "on the run" hiding in the mountains and was finally captured by the German army and sent to Stalag Luft 1 where he was a prisoner of war for thirteen months. It is an exciting story told with humour and panache. It illustrates the excitement, the fear and sometimes the boredom of fighting in the major theatres of war.
